After a hiatus spanning over three decades, WYKR FM 101.3 and WTWN AM 1100 are making a triumphant return to Bear Ridge Speedway with a lineup of five exhilarating races slated for broadcast this year. The excitement is palpable as motorsport enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the roar of engines and the thrill of competition echoing through the airwaves once again.

Ken Wells, a seasoned veteran in sports announcing, shares his enthusiasm for the venture: "As for calling five races out of the 2024 schedule at Bear Ridge this summer, I like the idea. Car racing, truck racing, dirt racing—it's very American in its delivery to the public." With a career spanning over 28 years in the newspaper business and countless broadcasts under his belt, Ken's wealth of experience promises to deliver an immersive experience for listeners tuning in.

Reflecting on his recent visit to Bear Ridge Speedway, Ken adds, "The day I was there, the Bear Ridge facility looked good, clean, and well-organized. Another thing I look forward to is the rubbing and tight racing that dirt track racing brings. It's an aggressive way of driving in all divisions and exciting to watch live."

Joining Ken in the announcer's booth is Christopher Smith, a rising star in sports broadcasting and a passionate Nascar fan. "I've always known that the world of sports broadcasting is where I want to be career-wise," Christopher shares. Every Sunday, the airwaves would carry the serene and uplifting sounds of the Wells River Congregational Church service, connecting listeners across northeast Vermont and northwest New Hampshire with a moment of reflection and unity. This tradition was a staple of our programming, a bridge between the radio station and the community it served.

However, as the years turned and technology evolved, WYKR transitioned from the AM frequency to the FM band and moved to a new location in 2000. With these changes, our Sunday programming transformed, and the live church broadcasts became a memory, a whisper of the past.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape of radio has dramatically changed. The world has grown closer through the internet, allowing listeners from all corners of the globe to tune into their favorite stations with just a click. Yet, in this vast network of global connectivity, the value of local, full-service radio programming has never been more profound. As December rolls in, we start sprinkling in Christmas songs gradually. In that first week after Thanksgiving, you’ll hear about one Christmas song per hour. But don’t you worry, as each week passes, we’ll be adding more and more yuletide cheer to our playlists. The closer we get to Christmas, the more festive our station sounds!

Then comes the highlight - starting at noon on Christmas Eve, WYKR becomes your non-stop Christmas music station for 36 hours straight! That’s right, from classic carols to modern holiday hits, we’ve got your Christmas soundtrack sorted, all the way through Christmas Day.

Back to Regular Programming

Once the Christmas festivities wind down, and we’ve all had our fill of eggnog and cookies, we return to our regular programming on December 26. It's a gentle transition back to the tunes and talks you love.

A Special Twist

And for a special touch, during this season, our Fairbanks Museum Weather programming spots will feature some delightful 'Peanuts' Christmas music. It's a timeless favorite, loved by many of our listeners. It’s just another way to spread joy and nostalgia during the holiday season.

Yankee Kingdom Media Corporation Takes the Reigns of WYKR and WTWN Radio Stations

WELLS RIVER, 10/26/23 - After more than five decades of dedicated service, Stephen Puffer, the longstanding figure behind Puffer Broadcasting Inc., has officially handed over the reins of WYKR and WTWN radio stations to Joshua Smith. The sale, which was initiated in May and underwent an extensive Federal Communications Commission permitting review, has now been successfully completed.

Founded in 1976 by Gene Puffer, WYKR holds a special place in the hearts of the community as it has been a trusted source of information and entertainment for over 45 years. In 1980, Stephen Puffer joined his family in ownership, along with his wife, Teresa, and continued to carry forward the station's legacy.

As they approach retirement age, Stephen and Teresa Puffer have chosen to entrust the future of WYKR and WTWN to Joshua Smith, a local individual with a passion for community and a deep understanding of the importance of these radio stations. While the Puffers are stepping back from day-to-day operations, they emphasize that they will remain in the background to support the station's ongoing success.

"Finding a local buyer who could maintain the goodwill and community presence of WYKR was of utmost importance to us," Stephen Puffer stated. "All potential buyers were suitable, but it came down to logistics that didn't work out. We are excited and happy that Joshua Smith has successfully completed the purchase."

Joshua Smith's journey has taken him around the world, from joining the Peace Corps to working with Doctors Without Borders and spending time in Niger, Pakistan, Uganda, and Nigeria. He brings a wealth of experiences and a fresh perspective to the role of station owner.

After operating a successful podcast series and internet radio station focused on Vermont authors and artists, Smith is well-prepared to embrace the responsibilities of running a radio station. He envisions expanding the station's online presence and engagement, offering listeners more opportunities to connect through platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

"I'm thrilled to be part of an organization that has been a cornerstone of the community for so many years," Smith remarked. "My goal is to honor the station's legacy while also bringing a contemporary approach to broadcasting."

Under Smith's ownership, the station's five full-time employees and two part-time staff members will continue their roles, ensuring a seamless transition. WYKR 101.3 FM and WTWN 1100 AM are now proudly part of the Yankee Kingdom Media Corporation family.

Smith's commitment to learning the ins and outs of radio operations is evident, and he welcomes the Puffers to remain involved as long as necessary. With a touch of humor, he quipped, "I'm a slow learner, so hopefully, they'll stick around for the next 10 years."
